DC Universe Online is set in, and takes its name from, the 'DC Universe'. This is the fictional world inhabited by the comic book superheroes from DC Comics, such as Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, as well as a legion of villains, notably Lex Luthor.
Aiming to be much more than a standard console game, DC Universe Online is what is called a "massively multiplayer online role-playing game", or MMORPG for short. What distinguishes this type of game from ordinary ones is its complex interactive online element. A large number of online players can participate simultaneously, taking on the roles of the many different characters in the scenario of the game. The virtual world of the game develops and changes as the players interact and in some cases collaborate with each other to complete missions and other tasks within the game. And, unlike an offline game, a MMORPG is subject to constant modification by the developers, allowing the game to change and evolve significantly over time.
When you first begin playing DC Universe Online you are required to choose a particular hero or villain character, and each one of these has a complex set of attributes, abilities and weapons. You can choose two 'powers' for your character, from a range. The choice of powers will alter the character's behavior and may make it more suitable for offense or defense, which is an important point to consider if you are collaborating with other players. In other words, you may need to arrive at a balance in the powers of your respective characters, which will then strengthen you as a team. In a similar way, characters can be assigned a style of movement from a choice of three. Finally, there is the question of what weapon to choose for your character. Some weapons are more suitable for use at close quarters, while others have different advantages or disadvantages.
As you can see, DC Universe Online strategy is quite deep and requires you to make careful choices when you set up your character. Of course, there is nothing to stop you from diving in at the deep end and playing by trial and error. You will gradually get to know the subtleties of the game that way, but a DC Universe Online strategy guide will certainly get you up and running much faster, by educating you about everything from the basics of the game, and all its characters and scenarios, right through to the deepest aspects of successful strategy.
