What Maxis needed to deliver with The Sims 2 wasn't more stuff for the little computer people to play with, but more personality. The Sims of the original are generic, angular, basic character models with few thoughts beyond their next meal, party, or toilet visit. The virtual people of The Sims 2 have individual personalities, believable facial expressions, and lifelong aspirations.

These irrepressible cartoonized people are bursting with life, and have far more charisma than before. Their appearance can be tweaked to an exacting degree, though it is somehow impossible to make an ugly one. Sims can be left to their own devices, and, if anything, their individual traits are almost too developed. Watching your Sim sneak away from family obligations to play video games alone can be like staring into some twisted existential mirror.

With this added personality, heartbreakingly, comes added mortality. Sims grow old and die, and their little lives can be touched by tragedy. The Sims 2 is the very definition of emergent game play; it is not so much the daily cycles of work and play that make it so compelling, but the spontaneous stories that arise from the everyday.

The Sims 2 channels players' creative energies as well as their obsessive-compulsive tendencies. Players have created a vast and bewilderingly inventive selection of items, houses, and people for other players to download, and YouTube is full of impressively complex machinima, from huge-scale choreographed dances to recreations of everything from Star Trek episodes to Britney Spears videos. It all proves that it is not just the modding hardcore who are capable of creating something awesome with a game engine.
