The biggest problem that most people face when they start playing Starcraft 2 is figuring out where to start. Ironically this is the most important part of the game, the starting point of a match. If you don't have a good start, or you make a mistake early in the game it could mean the end of the game already. By knowing the basics on how to properly start a match is key to win games in Starcraft 2 and the only way to do that is to understand what it means to make a good start.
The biggest problem that most people have when starting out is getting the proper build order for you economy down. If you don't know what to build and in what order, your economy will be wasted and you will waste precious time trying to build units and advanced buildings that should have been done at a different time. Knowing the proper build order in this strategy game is very important and should not be overlooked.
The second starting point is to make sure that you get your economy going quickly. You don't want to be stuck waiting for minerals or gas resources to be harvested. When you are sitting and waiting that doesn't mean your opponent is. The build order strategy is key to making your resources more valuable. If you have the proper build order you should never run out of minerals and always be building something that will improve your army. However, this could also mean that if you did not properly gather the right minerals at the right times, your build order could suffer and ultimately be the downfall of your army.
The final piece of advice about the proper start is to know your strategy going into the match. If you play random this will be difficult because knowing your enemy and knowing how to combat them is the key to victory. Every race has a way to spy on the opponents early in the game so you know what you are up against and once you start your match you should know your strategy for the race you were given. If you pick races this is very simple step, but the proper strategy can be hard to pick since each race battling a different one will have a different strategy. So always go with what you are comfortable with first, if not you must be ready to adapt.
When it comes down to it, you can say that winning comes from the beginning and mastering the beginning moments of a match can be the difference between victory or defeat.
