The XBox 360 "Prince of Persia" is a great game for family fun, but there are some aspects of it that can be a little tricky for younger game players or those who are new to gaming. In this article I'm going to provide some tips that will make the game a little easier to navigate. Don't worry; I'm not going to give the game away. This is not a walk-through. These are just some tips that I have learned as I have played the game, that will help you avoid getting stuck and to help you maneuver more easily.

Basically there are three navigation methods built into the game. The first is the map that is accessible by pressing the "back" or left arrow button. You should check this frequently, because this map includes a lot of information. You set your destination with it, view the number of light seeds collected and remaining in each location, and view the power plates obtained and remaining. The map also serves as a compass, with an arrow that shows both where you are and what direction you are facing. Using this feature is a fun way to help your children learn map reading.

The second form of navigation is pressing "Y" after you have selected a destination on the map. Elika will release a light trail that will show the best way to your destination. Try to limit the use of this technique, and challenge yourself to develop your map reading skills instead.

The third method of navigation is literally written on the walls. You have set your destination on the map, and the Prince is facing in the right way. Now take the time to look around for markers that will guide you in the right direction. Some of the markers will be obvious, such as poles and beams. Others a bit more subtle, such as landings built into the wall that you can climb or hang onto. When these markers fail you, however, look even closer, and notice the subtle scratches on the wall. Let these scratches guide you onto the right path. Horizontal scratches show where you need to run along the wall, while vertical scratches show where you need to climb or slide down a wall.

When you need to reach locations or light seeds that are just too far away, remember to use "A" then "Y" combination to let Elika give you a little lift. You can even use multiple sequences of this to bounce off distant walls to reach higher locations! Try it, you'll be surprised how far you can reach.

Sometimes, however, you will find that you just can't get somewhere. If you have explored all possible pathways, you probably need to acquire a power plate in order to access that area. Look around and chances are you will find a dimly lit plate or a plate covered by "corruption." You will need to gather enough light seeds to obtain the power plate at the Temple, or you will need to heal the land to expose the plate. Once you can use the power plate, you will be able to reach the new area.

Finally, when you do have an opportunity to use a power plate, some sequences will require you to steer with the thumb stick. The key is to only make small adjustments. Let the computer control the flight most of the time. Make only slight up, down or sideways adjustments as needed. Don't over steer.

There is a lot to discover in Prince of Persia, and a lot of territory to cover. I hope you find these tips helpful, and that they enable your family to get even more enjoyment out of a great game!
