Crimson Gem Saga Review - iPhone Port of a Console Class RPG Experience

ByTimo HTimo H

Gaming has always been a great passion for us at GeeksFinest starting off with games being as simple but well designed as they could ... Article Word Count: 646[View Summary]Comments (0)

A full-scale PSP game for only a fraction of the price - sounds quite good, right? And on top of that, Crimson Gem Saga also delivers on the gameplay front that's build upon a turn based RGP frame. It is on the App Store for quite some time already, but I just recently had a lot of fun with it and felt it's really worth sharing.

The iOS platform offers an immense amount of fun apps to kill some time with. But if you are looking for something comparable to the gameplay that the current console and PC generation offers you will find yourself left with only a few games on the App Store. If you are looking for such a title and you are into turn based RPGs, you just might have found the right game: Crimson Gem Saga (CGS) is a PSP port done right and fits exactly into this category. It does have a few minor quirks here and there, but nothing that could have touched the fun time I have spent with it.

And that is already one of the points that sets it apart from most of the other games on the App Store: CGS is a long game. 30 to 40 hours can easily be spent on the first play through. And during those hours CGS is not only fun, but looks and sounds great as well. Everything is drawn by hand with great attention to detail. Almost every character comes with a detailed avatar that shows up during the dialogues that are even voiced over for the story relevant bits. The animations and effects during the battles are nice to look at and also not too long - which is important if you see the same animation for the 400th time. All in all the presentation of this game is a real treat.

The Story kicks off with a disappointment for Killian, CGS' main character. It's his graduation day at Green Hill Academy and he expects nothing less but being awarded as the best student - a goal that he will slightly miss by being awarded 2nd best student. Being 2nd ruins Killians plan to join the Order of Light - however, he receives a letter of recommendation from the Principal of Green Hill Academy and before he knows it, he gets somehow caught up in the search for the powerful Crimson Gems.

The meat and flesh of every RPG is undoubtedly the combat system. And while CGS wont surprise you with any innovation on that front, its turn based combat system offers quite a bit of complexity, feels very rewarding and most importantly: It is a great deal of fun. Each character has his own skill tree that wants to be unlocked and upgraded. To upgrade your skills you need to find artifacts. To unlock new skills, you have to invest points that are earned during each battle. Treasure hunters will also be rewarded: During the campaign you will continuously find more powerful items to equip your characters with and useful artifacts to give you an edge in battle. Occasionally you will also bump into boss fights that are well staged and challenging - but never unfair.

Unfortunately, sometimes the game wants you to remember that it is a PSP port. The menu system is a bit awkward and needs some time getting used to - however, after 3 hours into the game I managed to adapt to it and it didn't bother me anymore.

This game gets my full recommendation to anyone who is into turn based RGPs and is looking for that 'real' gaming experience on his iPhone, iPod or iPad. Priced at $4,99 it's a steal.

Oh, did I mention it's published by Atlus? I guess that will ring a bell, with the Shin Megami Tensei series being one of their most famous ones.

ByDennis MatyerPlatinum Quality AuthorArticle Word Count: 403[View Summary]Comments (0)

If you're currently playing Rift, you're probably looking for a Rift Cleric Souls Guide. Cleric characters have powers that are similar to a wizard or warlock. They can craft some deadly spells to fight many different characters or to create spells that can be used to heal themselves. Clerics are very wise characters and they have high intellectual abilities.

If you've been having challenges, getting over a certain level or completing a specific stage, it's possible that you may not fully understand your character. This article will talk about the different cleric souls you can choose from and how you can quickly level your Cleric up to level 50.

i. Justicar - This class of cleric souls are healers. These characters can deliver some severe damage in close combat. They fight in close quarters and help their close comrades in battle. The challenge that this character faces is that they perform better when mixed deep in battle and not far from it. Enemies should try to keep this cleric away from heavy battle and attack them at a distance.

ii. Druid - These type of cleric souls gain their strength from the magical auras of their comrades. Druids should not be taken lightly, they can deal some severe damage especially in the mix of things. At the same token, the thing which provides a druid with great strength is also their downfall. As more and more of their companions are wounded or killed in battle, the weaker they get.

iii. Purifier - These cleric souls have qualities similar to the Phoenix where they are severely tested and through their challenge and overcoming it, do they emerge to create their soul. They have the ability to cure many life-threatening wounds. They are not known for having great skills on the front line. Attackers are wise to rush this cleric in large numbers and with focused intent.

Using a step-by-step Rift Mastery Guide to master any Cleric Soul with ease

As you've seen above, Clerics have the amazing ability to craft up spells for healing and for attacking numerous foes and enemies. If you want to direct this character with laser-like focus, you should seek some help in the form of a step-by-step guide. Where to Find Best Rift Class Builds

ByMatt RossPlatinum Quality AuthorArticle Word Count: 567[View Summary]Comments (0)

One of the main reasons why a lot of players feel their characters in the newest massively multiplayer RPG Rift: Planes of Telara are underpowered is because they use the wrong soul tree builds. What exactly are soul trees, which ones should you pick and in which ones to invest your points in are all valid questions which tons of players don't know answers to, and this article will attempt to provide some of the much-needed information about it.

In Rift players can choose from eight different callings: Warrior, Mage, Rogue and Cleric. Each of those has a selection of 8 different so called souls, which are basically classes. By selecting a particular soul you gain access to its respective soul tree, in which you can invest points that you gain from leveling up. Every time you gain a level you will also gain one or two skill points which can be used to further improve your class choice. In Rift: Planes of Telara you don't actually gain abilities as you level up but instead by putting those skill points into soul trees. You can maximize only one of these soul trees by the time you hit the level cap, plus you will get a few extra points to put into another tree as well.

That basically means you can not branch out from one tree to another too much as you will then not be able to take the best abilities from any of the soul trees. You must specialize into one in order to get the most out of it. I should note that you can only put in one skill point into one soul tree per level, so when you do get 2 of these points you can invest the second one into another tree. This is how the game is forcing you to play differently than most other players by choosing where you will skill up.

The abilities in a soul tree are divided into two categories, Root skills and Branch skills. You can't invest points directly into root abilities: for them to become available you have to put points into branch skills. Branch skills typically give you a new ability but more frequently they improve your damage, survivability or other character stats or abilities. Therefore, root skills are basically gained passively.

In order to know where to put points into your soul trees, and even which ones you should pick, first you must decide what kind of a character you want to build. Ask yourself what kind of gameplay you like: tank, ranged magic damage dealer, a healer, a ranger with a pet or something else. Once you know what kind of class you wish to play and have most fun with, I recommend reading more about the souls and figuring out which ones are best at their respective job. For example if you wish to heal other players obviously you will want to play a Cleric, but there are eight different cleric souls available for choosing so make sure you pick the ones that suit your play style: do you wish long-casting, direct heals, or healing over time. Do you prefer healing in instances and raids or in PvP combat? Those are all questions you must know before you choose your souls, and if you can answer them then knowing where to put skill points isn't as hard as it seems.

If you want to find the best Rift soul tree builds visit this lens. Additionally see Rift Leveling Guide for more specific information on all callings and classes.
